Understanding Swarms
What is a Bee Swarm?
A bee swarm is nature's way of colony reproduction. When a hive becomes crowded, about half the bees leave with the old queen to find a new home. They cluster together temporarily while scout bees search for suitable locations.
Swarms typically appear as a large mass of bees clinging to a tree branch, fence post, building corner, or other structure. They can range from the size of a softball to a basketball.
The good news: Swarms are usually very gentle because the bees have no home or honey to defend. They're focused on finding shelter, not attacking.
What To Do
(And What Not To Do)
Do This
- Stay calm and keep your distance (15+ feet)
- Keep children and pets away from the area
- Call a local beekeeper immediately (that's us!)
- Take a photo to help us assess the situation
- Note the exact location and how long it's been there
Don't Do This
- Spray them with water or pesticides
- Attempt to remove them yourself
- Throw things at the swarm or disturb it
- Seal up entry points while bees are inside
- Wait too long - swarms can move within hours!
